Is Atheist Alliance International "Under New Management"?

by Martin Boers

The latest illegitimate "Annual General Meeting" of Atheist Alliance International was held on Sunday the 12th of November. Current supporters and potential donors - none of whom received an invitation to the "AGM" - might have expected that by now they would have been informed of some important outcomes of the meeting. For example:

  • What were the results of the board elections? Who is running the organisation now?

  • Given the organisation's commitment to transparency, where can supporters see the financial details for 2022?

  • What were the results of the motions that were put to the members at the "AGM"? For example, in the future, will emails be sent as plain text, HTML, or PDF?

And, current supporters and potential donors must still be wondering when they will get answers to critically important questions like this:

  • Why did the board knowingly submit false financial information to the California Attorney General, only days after the "EGM" in January where they refused to answer questions about their "Disclosure Document"?

  • Why is the organisation still suspended by the California Secretary of State (SOS) and Franchise Tax Board (FTB), and therefore not legally allowed to do business in California or anywhere else?

  • How much will AAI be required to pay to the FTB in taxes, interest and penalties before their good standing will be restored? Where is this money coming from?

  • What is the status of the IRS investigation into the organisation's federal tax issues?

  • Since they are no longer legally allowed to use the name "Atheist Alliance International", what is the new legal name of the organisation?
One development that supporters will undoubtedly be interested in, is if Fotis Frangopoulos has retained his position on the board. As part of his recent re-election pitch to members, Fotis proclaimed:

"As Treasurer I improved the way we maintain financial records and I have been instrumental in AAI’s ability to meet statutory reporting requirements in the US ... after many setbacks, I am proud to have played an integral role in keeping this organisation able to operate ..."

Given that AAI has demonstrably not met its statutory reporting requirements in the US in quite serious and consequential ways, and given that the organisation has not been legally doing business since 2021 until the present day - did the members call out Fotis on his lies, or was he re-elected to the board without being held accountable for the damage he has done to the organisation over the past four years?

In short: Is AAI really "under new management", or is it just more of the same?
